Smoking is an unhealthy habit and you would be hard pressed to find anyone who says it’s not. However, there are many thousands of smokers who argue that it is their right to smoke and while this may be true, smoking bans in many public buildings is becoming the norm. This has come to include many casinos and other gambling rooms. The question many French casino owners have to ask themselves is does the ban hurt their business. To answer that question, you have to look at players and their habits.
While not every player in a casino drinks, many do and unfortunately, many of them smoke as well. Some people only smoke while they are drinking alcohol or gambling. This means that if they are not able to smoke in the casino, they will most likely not play there. Many will seek out places that have not banned smoking or simply choose to play online in the privacy of their own homes.
There are also going to be some players who refuse to play in casinos that ban smoking simply because they don’t like being told what to do nor have their rights restricted. According to a study conducted by the French site Casino du Jour this is a matter of choice that many casino owners have to take into consideration when deciding whether or not to join the ban on smoking. Of course, there are always going to be those players who are grateful for the ban and will actually visit the casino more often. This may not make up for the clients that the casino is going to lose however.
If you have ever had the opportunity to watch a poker tournament, you will notice that there are many players who have a cigar in their mouth but they don’t appear to ever really be smoking it. For many players, it is simply a habit that they have when they are playing. Casinos who take this privilege away may find that they don’t have as many tournaments booked and will lose business.
Casino owners will have to decide for themselves if they are losing business due to a smoking ban. However, if the ban is a citywide ban, the casinos may have no choice but to abide by the law. Players will then have to decide if smoking is that important to them.
